About Us

Judy and Susan began J R Flamingo Fine Fabric & More in January 2003 as a doll-stuffing business in Gold River, CA.  They soon discovered they enjoyed the fabric and embellishment world as well, and began filling up the front room of their small business with beautiful cotton prints, silks, arts and crafts supplies and more.  They applied to quilt shows as a vendor and began selling their wares throughout Northern California at quilting venues.  Within a few short years, the tiny J R Flamingo front room was overflowing with fabric, and their income had become 90% fabric sales, so Judy and Susan decided to move J R Flamingo to larger, more accessible quarters. The fabric store on Fulton Avenue opened in April 2005.

Judy Ross (pic soon)

Judy has always been an artist and craftsperson. After years in private industry, Judy retired in 2000 to pursue her avocation full-time in arts & crafts.  She is an expert dollmaker, stained glass artist, and up-and-coming fiber artist.

Mr. Darcy (pic soon)*

With his charming personality and youthful exuberance, Mr. Darcy serves as our on-the-floor salesperson. With his sugar-coated meow, he's been known to close many a sale (and solicit many a stroke). His hobbies include following strangers home and biting Mr. Chan's tail.

Georgiana (pic soon)*

Like her namesake, Georgiana is a prim miss in favor of tidiness and order. She serves as general floor manager. In her spare time, she likes to eat Christmas tree branches and surgically alter the occasional ornament or other valuable object with her claws.

*Cats present at store in spirit only.

Susan Weir

Susan retired from teaching in 2008, allowing her to spend more time at the store. With over 25 years ruling a classroom, Susan has become an expert at taking charge of any situation or substance and hustling it into respectable shape (she is currently working on her son in addition to the store).

Dumpling

Our customer service expert, Dumpling's sweet personality and saucer-like eyes, combined with a soft paw on the knee, have earned us many repeat customers. She is also useful as a (supersized) doorstop and paperweight.

Jack E. Chan (pic soon)*

Mr. Chan's experience includes swatting at a variety of yarns, fabrics and other threads. Don't be deceived by that baby face: he is renowned as a dog-stalker and has been known to terrorize local canines both large and small. Special skills include sleeping, crying, nipping at strangers and displaying himself on tabletops.

Valerie

Like many other stores that have resident cats, J R Flamingo has a resident quiltmaker--Valerie.
